Clearing Cookies and Cache

Cookies and caches in internet web browsers store information about your visits to websites. This data is usually to make your next visit easier. Sometimes the cookies and cache are used to store your advertising preferences.

There are occasions though when you want to delete this information from the browsers.

The steps needed to do this are different depending on the browser you are using.

Here are the links to clear cookies:

Just click on the link and follow the steps.

I find that I then need to close the browser I am using completely, closing all of the tabs, before heading back to the website I’m trying to access.

If you are still having issues with cookie error messages trying holding the Ctrl key on your keyboard and then pressing F5 on the keyboard (Ctrl + F5) This is known as a hard refresh on a Windows PC.

On Apple devises the hard refresh is: Apple + R or command + R

Hope that helps.

What pages do you need on your website?

Like most things in life there isn’t a perfect answer to the question about what website pages you need.

What follows is a starting point if you are reviewing an existing site or planning a new one.

I have divided the type of pages into standard, legal and sales & marketing pages.

Standard Website Pages

A good start for most businesses would be the following pages:

  • Home
    • Make it clear what you do
    • What problems do you solve?
    • How do you help?
    • Who do you help?
    • Demonstrate why someone should choose you rather than one of your competitors
  • Contact
    • Make it easy for people to get in touch with you
  • Testimonials
    • Provide evidence that you are as good as you say you are
    • Video testimonials are very powerful
  • FAQs
    • Answer the common questions prospective clients may have
  • Get a quote/price
    • Make it easy for people to find out your fees
  • About
    • Build a good impression of your business and position you as an expert in your industry
  • Blog/News
    • Adding short articles to the site is another way to prove you are an expert in your field and that you are active in your industry
    • Excellent for SEO and marketing
  • Service/Product 1
    • Details of 1 of your core services/products
  • Service/Product 2
    • Details of 1 of your core services/products
  • Service/Product 3
    • Details of 1 of your core services/products

You could have the details of your services/products on a single page.

However, evidence shows that having a dedicated page about a particular service or product is more effective.

That set of 10 pages is a good foundation for a successful website.

And then you can add new pages as and when needed.

Legal Pages

You will also need some or all of the following legal website pages:

  • Privacy Policy
    • Explain what you do with any data you collect from people on your website.
  • Cookie Policy (this page is sometimes integrated with the privacy policy)
  • Website Terms of Use
    • This page explains the “rules” a website visitor should follow when using your website.
  • Delivery Information
    • Explain when people can expect to receive the items they have bought. This page is good for supporting customer support.
  • Refunds and Returns
    • It is often easier to provide a separate page for refunds rather than including these policies in a lengthy terms and conditions page.
  • Comment Policy
    • If you have a blog on your website you might want to have a Comment Policy
  • Copyright Notice
    • This page is used to inform visitors about your policies on them using your content or even how you want them to link to your content.

Sales and Marketing Website Pages

As well as a selection of standard web pages and the required legal pages a website also needs some sales and marketing pages. It might be that your business wouldn’t typically sell from a website but I do ask that you at least consider it.

Most websites need some marketing pages though to boost the number of people that get to see the site.

Here is a brief introduction to a particular type of marketing page and a sales page.

Landing Pages

In digital marketing, a landing page, sometimes known as a lead capture page, is a standalone page solely used as part of a marketing campaign. It is the page that a person “lands” on after clicking a link elsewhere on the internet.

Typically you will be offering a person who lands on this page something in exchange for their contact details. This could be an e-book, gift voucher, free sample, free review or a free course – the list is endless.

A landing page only has one focus. And for that reason it is common to hide the navigation menu from the top and footer area from these types of pages.

This is the top section of a landing page:

If you’d like to see the page itself head over to “5 Essential Steps to Keep your Website Safe”.

Sales Pages

Landing pages can get a bit difficult to define sometimes are they are known by many other terms.

A sales page though is much more straightforward.

A sales page is another standalone page with the only aim of selling a single product. The purpose of a sales page is to convert a viewer into a customer.

So to recap:

On a business website you need a selection from the standard pages, some of the legal pages, at least one marketing page and possibly a sales page (multiple pages if you are running an online shop or sell a lot of services/products online).

I have already got a domain name

Transcript:

Hi, It’s Tosca here.

Another common question I get asked is about the domain name.

People say, If I’ve already got a domain name is that something we can use with the new website?

Well, yes, I can. And it’s something that I recommend, especially if it’s bean registered awhile.

So all I need from you is the login details wherever you bought the domain name from so I can connect it to the new website.

Or if you prefer, I’ll give you the settings and you can do that yourself.

Older domain names tend to perform better in the search engines than new ones. So, it’s always my recommendation to use one if you’ve already got a site up and running on it as well.

Why I Love Spiders (Vlog version)

Transcript:

Why has the spider got such a bad reputation in some quarters?

I think it must be to do with the way they look.

They aren’t all very cute are they.

Spiders are actually revered in some cultures and they are certainly adored where I live.

I love spiders.

Well, I love the good, SEO spiders.

I’m not scared of these spiders.

I actually do all I can to attract these spiders.

SEO spiders, sometimes called bots, robots, web crawlers, are little apps, sent out by the search engines to consume content on the internet.

If the spiders didn’t exist the likes of Google wouldn’t have the answers to our important questions.

These SEO spiders come to a website and catalogue the content they find.

And then they keep on visiting hoping to find more info.

So, what can you do to attract more spiders?

There are 2 things we can do to attract the spiders:

  1. Publish more content. That’s why integrating a blog with your website is so important.
  2. Link from 1 post to another post on your website.

I like to think of these cute, little SEO spiders using these internal links as stepping stones to get around a website.

So you can see why I love spiders. Spiders are good.

And “yes,” that’s where I got my business name from.

Bye, from The Wicked Spider

How do you price a website?

Transcript:

Hi, it’s Tosca here.

I just thought I’d respond to the question: “How do you price a website?”

If you’ve never bought website before, it can be quite bewildering trying to compare all the prices.

It even does my head in sometimes when I see all the different pricing options available that just pop up on Google.

It was like, I remember going to shop for a drill and the trek around the DIY shops, trying to work out if a hammer drill was needed, not to mention the bits, the chuck and the keys.

Shopping for something new for the first, or even the second time, is not that easy.

So, this is how I price a website:

So, there’s the domain name, the web hosting.

There’s how many pages are needed to meet the objectives of the business?

What’s going on the pages?

Are there any special functionalities, like ecommerce for instance?

Is copyrighting required?

Is there a need for a logo?

Is a blog needed?

How much keyword research will I need to do for this particular client?

How much training will be needed?

And how much added value can I add to this business that I’m working with?

So that’s 10 essential elements that go into pricing a website – for me anyway.

If we have a discussion about a website we’ll go through those questions.

So, I hope that helps next time you go website shopping.

Squarespace Review

Just what is Squarespace?

Squarespace is one of the many DIY online platforms that people use to build their own business website. It is similar to Wix and Weebly if you’ve heard of those.

Every website has to have something that it is built with. This could be a 100% bespoke framework built with pure code, or, it could be a platform that already inherently has some of the essential features.

Squarespace is one of many website builders that has some features built in that most sites would need. It can take a bit to get used to, however, with patience and perseverance, it can be done.

Squarespace is a website builder that offers many templates that you can reuse. This means that some of the mundane repetitive work is done for you, which allows those that can’t even code to build a properly functioning website with the simple drag and drop interface. There are all kinds of amazing features offered within the Squarespace platform as well.

Bear in mind though that many people will use the same template. And the templates may not match with what you really want to achieve.

Some pros and cons of Squarespace

Pros

  • Good collection of templates
  • A good degree of customisation allowed with regards to changing colours, fonts and photos
  • Better value for the money than some of the other builders
  • No need to learn programming
  • They have a step by step wizard approach to get you started

Cons

  • Steep-ish learning curve if you are starting from scratch making a website
  • Fewer integrations with other online platforms you may want to use compared to other builders like WordPress
  • Some people report finding the terminology confusing (if you look at the reviews)
  • Your website will use the same template as thousands of others in your industry
  • If you prefer to talk on the phone with someone Squarespace do not offer telephone customer service

Squarespace is a WYSIWYG Editor

Squarespace uses an easy “What you see is what you get” (WYSIWYG) editor. Things can simply be arranged on the pages without coding by dragging and dropping blocks. This saves a lot of time during the design process and with a creative approach you can get a great looking website up and running.

Squarespace even offers an app (iOS & Android) that allows you to edit your website on the go. This is perfect for those website owners who are changing and adding content on a regular basis. You can also add an announcement bar in the app as well. This is a great feature that you don’t find with many other website builders.

I have been told by several clients that Squarespace is not beginner-friendly, but with some time and patience it can be done.

However, if you have used a WYSIWYG editor before you know that it can be a bit constraining from time to time, especially when you need a special layout.

Building a website using Squarespace

Squarespace makes it easy to start a blog or even building an ecommerce platform where you can sell products online. The features and options that come with each and every website are good. The websites are hosted on the Squarespace servers and are mobile-optimised too.

If you are going to create your own website I would recommend trying a few builders to see which you feel most comfortable with.

The business plan with Squarespace is currently £15 per month and you can cancel at any time – just remember if you cancel your website will not be available.

DIY websites aren’t going to be the best option for those that don’t want the hassle. However, Squarespace is a good option to get started if you want to give it a go.
